PRESS RELEASE: JILL TOKUDA FILES NOMINATION PAPERS FOR HAWAIʻIʻS SECOND CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT

JILL TOKUDA FILES NOMINATION PAPERS FOR HAWAIʻIʻS SECOND CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT

Honolulu, Hawaiʻi – Former State Senator Jill Tokuda, a candidate for Hawaiʻi’s Second Congressional District, officially submitted today the required number of signatures to appear on the 2022 Primary Election ballot. She is the first major Democratic candidate in the race to file nomination papers.

“Since launching our Congressional Campaign in early May, we’ve received an outpouring of support from residents across the State. From Hilo to Hanalei, it is clear that the people of Hawaiʻi’s Second Congressional District want a leader with a proven record of leadership and someone who knows how to get the job done,” said Tokuda. “As a mother of two and an aunty to many, I understand firsthand the urgency of our local families – the need for affordable housing, access to health care and good jobs.  If the voters will have me, I will work hard every day to give Hawaiʻi’s families on our Neighbor Islands and rural Oahu a voice and an advocate in Congress. This race isn’t about me – it’s about providing a better future for our keiki.”

Tokuda served in the Hawaii State Senate for 12 years (2006-2018), and during her tenure she chaired the Ways and Means Committee, where she was responsible for balancing the state’s $14 billion budget and negotiating the final approval for fiscal measures at the Hawaii Legislature. She also chaired the Labor, Education, Higher Education, and Agriculture and Hawaiian Affairs committees and served as Majority Whip.

Tokuda has extensive private sector experience as a small business owner of her own consulting practice. Over the last two years, she took the lead working with the State of Hawaii to track billions of dollars in pandemic relief funding available to all the states, advocating for Hawaii’s fair share.

The Primary Election is on August 13, 2022.
